Custom Work

We can work off of an existing design, adjusting the size or color or we can begin with your new ideas and create new designs. We can also create a shade for your lamp base.

Please contact us to arrange a time to discuss custom work. We do on site consultations or we can meet with you at the gallery. We are at the gallery on Saturdays, 11am-6pm or by appointment. For out of town folks we can work with you over the phone.

The Process

lam.jpg

The first step in this process is forming the armature. We form the armatures from wire or bamboo, designing each lamp with the light fixture in mind for proper heat ventilation. The armature can be any form, shape or size. Often inspiration comes from flowers, sea creatures, insects, or an Asian aesthetic.

The paper is made of an abaca and cotton blend, using a mold and deckle to form sheets. The sheets are pressed with an eight-ton press to bind the fibers.papering.jpg
We apply the damp paper to the armature one panel at a time. No glue is used, just a soft brush to fold back the edges onto themselves forcing the fibers to bond together. Once the paper has dried taut, the piece is painted with watercolor paint using brushes and air brush.

When the paint is dry a resin is applied, kestrel.jpg strengthening the lamp structurally and giving the paper a translucent, glowing which acts as a protective layer, quality. The final step is configuring the electrical components. We also do the installation when needed.

About Us

About Us LampLám Quáng has been hand-crafting lamps and light sculptures for nearly a decade. An exploration of the art of paper-making in its primitive form, led to Lám to his original use of paper fibers to create sculptural lamp forms. During this evolution, his paper making skills have reached a level of refinement that allow creative freedom. He opened HiiH Gallery in 1998, on Alberta Street, in Portland, Oregon and it has continued to grow since then.

Kestrel Gates joined Lám in June of 2004 applying her background in the performing arts to the design and construction of HiiH’s lamp forms. Together, Lám and Kestrel work as a creative team, from concept and design, through the creation of each work. They do custom work and in house sales at HiiH Gallery.
